When setting up an Internet based business - whether it’s a new pure online biz, an add-on or conversion of existing business, the strategy should be clear before action is taken. A bad online presence is almost worse than none at all, in terms of image.

The last few years of dot.com hype have left investments in the dirt and investors have turned to other industries. DLPI helps E-biz people and we are constantly gathering information about the trends in Internet commerce. If successful e-biz is your goal then we can help you.

When doing e-biz you will need products, tools, machinery, and an agreement with an ISP. Your will need to have a computer with Internet access, a homepage with ordering and billing system, an invoicing system, a database, a communication platform with e-mail, fax and so forth. Should you own this or rely on a Service Provider?

A vast majority of Internet surfers has heard about e-biz, some are using it to do shopping. The industry is not hesitating with promises - A revolution in trade and commerce is taking place and the rapid growth of the Internet and the development of capable software makes it all come true.

Your Site Needs Hosting
We are able to handle traffic, able to deliver services, be flexible. The services incl. database ready server, very good backdoors and statistics. Backdoors could be easy FTP uploads or synchronization with in-house server, plus online viewing of hits and traffic. ISP’s up time is crucial. A site not working is the worst-case scenario = no sales. We commit to excellent service; where lower priced services are often not worth while.

A Functional Web page

The front page tells all in a few words. Describe the procedures a customer can go through, like choosing and finding products, placing the order, choosing freight method, and choosing means of payments. Provide lead-time for parcels and be specific. Tell about backlogs instantly, while the customer is still online – rather tell too much than too little. Does the customer want to have orders delivered as 2 shipments or one shipment when all products are available?

The Database is key

A setup with good integration cuts down workflow to speed up order cycle time, so think smart. If customers order in same database as you invoice and handle your purchase orders, then you wont need manual work. You also might consider Electronic Data Interchange.

Transactions
The billing part is about setting up a service with a transaction provider. Liability has to be proven also when choosing banks or corporations to rely on. Today there are numerous service providers around that a cost effective. There are lots of occasions where the order processing takes too long and orders are lost, or actually stops due to incompatible credit cards or the lack of products. Be smart and review a lot of worst-case scenarios. Where are the traps then? Have you had a really good or horribly bad experience with shopping on the net? Please send us your story on info@datalinkpacific.com. We would like to assist in finding workable solutions for these scenarios.

Communication
Communication today should consist of a Website, chat, E-mail, phone, fax, snail mail, telex, etc. Everything must be client workable online, i.e. Order tracking. Don’t put customers through a complex set of forms when they want to contact you. Use an instant and very easy to use e-mail address. No company can afford being sloppy with communication.

Marketing
How to sell stuff? The oldest trick in the book but written in a language that we don’t all understand. Be aggressive with good manors. Respect denials and consider your line of products; is there a need for your stuff? How is the competition? What are your key benefits? If the stuff you try to sell is not of any interest to anybody, then change – quickly. You can do a research with you friends and family, you can push items to the press, and you can ask yourself if you really like your own stuff.

When you really believe in your products then drag some attention to your site. Register on search engines, advertise with banners, let the press know you are on, send some e-mail to folks. Here comes everyone’s bad conscience; SPAM or bulk email. Servers are around where folks register to get rid of SPAM e-mail. Please try to use and respect those server lists.

If you business have other sales channels, then also use those channels for advertising your website. Put an advertisement in the newspaper; send physical mailing to existing customers and new prospects. Even fax broadcast you information, since fax is still a major marketing tool.

Background
E-biz/E-commerce is shopping without meeting people, its desktop pc’s that talks to Internet servers. It is bits and bytes traveling through fiber or copper lines in a closed network. It is cold and fast transactions. It’s on the Internet.

The Internet was originally designed by military for the military, but soon became popular with the universities and the government. Then the net was released to the public.

The Internet is just one of many nets, often using dedicated data cables, often using the normal telephone lines. The Telco’s were already around, but the word ISP surfaced. Many Telco’s are excellent ISP’s and today some ISP’s are becoming successful Telco’s The fact that the cables are being used by so many applications is one of the reasons why the inter is hard to kill.

The Internet is based on the TCP/IP protocol. The protocol is the standard for the bit traveling and defines that every device on the net needs to have an address. The addresses are divided into 12 digit numbers, which attain is divided into 4 separate segments of 3 digits. The lowest value is 000.000.000.000 and the highest number is 255.255.255.255. So we already have a limited amount of number to share and a new set of numbers are already defined but not at all known to the public – as they are still so new.

How does your machine know where to look for www.dlpi.net? By using servers around the world that translates it into the 12-digit number. The servers hold up-to-date records of all servers in the world. Those servers are called DNS – Dynamic Name Server, and they all sync with each other worldwide. So if somebody at any ISP worldwide messes up the list – error will be known worldwide quickly. Not very save, I would say.

Resources on-line. Software providers such as Microsoft, Netscape, extractor pro, set transaction standards, anti Spam servers, e-biz umbrella sites, search engines registrations, biggest e-commerce sites.

Whatever your business on the Internet is commercial, or just being on the net, we can help you with setups and to understand the world of computers and the Internet. We assist companies & private fold to get the most out of their computer the Internet. We could help with purchasing of new hardware & software, and we do the assembling and installing.

What do you need to do? Purchase new computers? Get hardware upgrades? Get some advice before investing? Further Investment planning? Consult someone who knows? Thinking about outsourcing? Does you network need maintenance? Get advice to the right software? Get your servers to take the load? Are you stuck and need troubleshooting? Get more out of your ERP solution?

Why use Consultants?
Resellers primarily sell the products that they already know, and sell. They are a naturally limit to the range of product when consulted. Real consultants still push their preferences to products when they have good experience with products, but tend to be way above the standard reseller sales crew. If your reseller is an authorized HP reseller, then he is not likely to recommend a Xerox printer – even if that would suit you the best.

I see it all the time. Everybody that I know around the world always asks me for my independent advice. It can save you many head eggs.  Because the investment in a computer is more or less lost at purchase if there is really no use for it or no one to operate it properly. The cost of hardware & software is only 15% of the total cost of ownership. The rest is setting it up and keeping maintenance, training of user, and so forth.

That’s why it sometimes is better to buy 2 computers for an employee. One for professional office use and another for use at home. At home users will gain the feel, the readiness, the trust and the courage to deal with complex office matters, often quicker and better than during stressed office hours.
